December is going to be a GREAT month!
Firstly: a few weeks ago, PPAC held their fifth annual Philly Photo Day. They invited as many people as possible to take their best possible picture of the city anytime that day. Obviously my plan was to go after dark. Unfortunately, that evening happened to be my friend Jamie Tyksinski’s solo opening at the Bucks County Project Gallery. I dashed over to check out his wonderful work and wish him luck. I mentioned why I was having to rush and he very kindly recommended a high vantage point he’d discovered that might work well for my needs. And indeed it did. If you know the city and my work, it probably doesn’t take much of an imagination to figure out which my favorite high rise is – the Cira Center. It’s face is covered with 1514 LED lights that can be programmed to change color and create any number of images or effects. It’s even been transformed into an enormous video game! This particular night it was displaying a very elegant red and white T. I haven’t figured out why, but I love that it stood for my # 2 son’s name, Thomas. This is what the building looked like when I got there:
Fifteen hundred and sixty one pictures were submitted. They’ve made 10″x8″ prints of every one and they are to be exhibited at a special show starting tomorrow, November 14th. Forty of those pictures have been chosen to be featured individually on medium sized billboards throughout the city beginning the first week of December. I’m happy to report that one of them will be mine, located at Spring Garden Street and North Front Street. :). Here’s what the Cira Center looked like by the time I left:
Here are the other good things happening through December:
2. Four pictures will be on display at Red Filter Gallery in Lambertville as of the 15th November: two black and white traditional shots and two Photo Luminism images, all alongside the outstanding colour works of Brian Lav.
3. One traditional colour print of Henry Mercer’s concrete castle Fonthill in night fog, is being exhibited at the Bucks County Project Gallery in Doylestown as of November 21st. This will be a wonderful exhibition showing affordable local works by 27 photographers, salon style. But that’s not all! Jewelry artisan Susan Forker will be showing her unique combination of photography and jewelry. Join us for some Christmas shopping!
