Collectors Invest in
Photo Luminism
Four years ago, I would never have dreamt that I’d be saying ‘collectors invest in Photo Luminism’; and certainly not in reference to a style of artwork that I had created. But it was only 6 months later that some of the most extraordinary things started happening. And when they did, they all blew me away.
The first was back in October 2011 when gallerist Tamara Cannon made a spot decision to show my work in her stunning Gallery Piquel, a gallery that normally has a strict ‘no photographs’ policy. That exposure led to back to back exhibitions through 2012 locally, including my first two man and solo shows, and a show in which my work was featured at LG Tripp in Philadelphia.
In 2013, I made my first corporate sales of multiple images to top brand international hotels and corporations. 2014 became the year of being accepted (or personally invited) to participate in international juried art fairs, each one bigger and better than the last.
The latest of the revelations have come about as a result of my frequenting the small but highly respected Red Filter Gallery in Lambertville, NJ. This is predominantly a black and white gallery run by an extraordinary man with a unique vision and a desire to show not just successful national photographers but to encourage local emerging photographers aswell. He does this not only by giving us the rare opportunity to exhibit but also in my case by nudging me to step outside my comfort zone – converting my vivid colour images to B&W, printing on fine art paper and matting and framing behind glass.
For this exhibition he invited me to make my own image choices, with one proviso, that I show mainly black and white work – something Photo Luminism generally isn’t – while adding that if I wanted to include a couple of color shots to help promote my brand, I could. He then invited his list of collectors to view our work. This man is Forrest Old.
I am exceptionally proud to say that during the course of this exhibition in which I was showing 6 images, I sold 7. Two to a NJ art collector, two to a Philadelphia family, two to an architect and his wife in San Francisco and one to an established photography collector in New York.
I am deeply indebted to Forrest and all those who have helped me on my way in this new career.
